For one, damage is mitigated by chance to hit. This is only half the story, however, what about damage? Well, here we need to think about a few things. Yep, there's really no question, acid splash is the way to go if you want to save money and carrying capacity. However, wizards aren't known for their high carrying capacity. Well, Acid Splash is the clear winner here. Light crossbows use a move action to reload (potentially problematic, but we'll get to that later) and deal 1d8 damage, useable every turn.įirstly, let's compare costs (assuming that a material component pouch and spellbook ate already present): Heavy crossbows -which deal 1d10 damage- take a standard action to reload, and thus can be used (without feats) at most every other turn. Of the crossbows available to a wizard (by means of proficiency) there are only heavy and light crossbows. Both deal 1d3 damage, both target touch ac, and both can have their damage permanently boosted by 1 with the purchase of an alchemical focus (either " acid" or " liquid ice"). Of these, "Acid Splash" has more utility against regenerating enemies (many foes who normally regain health will stop doing so when affected by acid damage) and "Ray Of Frost" has more potential for growth (a spellcaster can take " weapon focus: ray" to make that spell, and some others, more accurate). Of the cantrips commonly available to wizards (so no " jolt") only two deal direct damage at range (thus being comparable to a crossbow), " acid splash" and " ray of frost". However, 1E deliberately mitigates the strength of its cantrips.ĭoes this actually make a crossbow a better backup for a wizard (for simplicity's sake, I will use a wizard here, sorcerers may well have bloodline powers to attack with, witches have their hexes, bards, bloodragers, skalds, magi, and most divine casters have more weapon options) than using cantrips? We can compare this to a game like Pillars Of Eternity (admittedly, just a pair of CRPG games at this point, but a TTRPG is in development) where low-level spells eventually become at-will spells for high-level spellcasters, which is considered fine because the individual spells aren't that powerful, or Pathfinder 2E, where cantrips automatically heighten and become more powerful as spellcasters level up (because it is far harder to end an encounter with one spell in that system).
